DofE silver expedition

This weekend our Duke of Edinburgh’s silver award team set out on their 3 day expedition from East Morton (near Keighley) to Brimham rocks.

After a lot of extra organising due to Covid-19 conditions, which meant that each Explorer had to cook their own food and go home to sleep alone in a tent in their garden, the expedition got under way in variable weather conditions.

The team are already thinking about what to do for their gold expedition.

Care for care homes

Over the next few weeks we’re asking our young people to collectively carry out 10,000 acts of kindness to help residents in their local care home, become kindness champions and show that they ‘care for care homes’. From crafts to letters, videos to swapping skills, our young people will help care home residents to feel less lonely and more connected during the current health crisis.

Read more at the Scout association website on how you can become involved. This will count towards community work of the DofE award and the Chief Scout’s challenge badges.

#campathome

During Covid-19 lockdown in April, Northumberland Scouts organised a “virtual” camp for all sections in Scouting, plus guests, culminating in a world record attempt on 30th April to get over 65,000 (previous record) camping that night. You can read more about #campathome here. In total at least 84,000 took part (still counting a day later).

Several whalers took part by camping in their own gardens; here’s a selection of photos looking anything from cosy to freezing. We’ll be getting badges for those taking part, and there’s also t-shirts, hoodies & neckers available from Rugby gear.

Tom managed to camp out for every single night of April, and Lucy managed 21 nights. Both are aiming to achieve their 100 nights away staged badge by the end of lockdown. Well done for such a major effort (and well done to those doing their washing afterwards!). Others qualified for an April night’s camping in their progress towards the Yorkshire challenge badge.

St. George’s day

On Thursday 23rd April it’s St. George’s day.

Traditionally we’d celebrate the event with a parade, but this year it’s been cancelled. So instead, while we clap for our NHS carers at 20.00 on the 23rd, please also wear your necker. The county’s Scouts will all be doing this; https://www.facebook.com/events/2848676241916663/

Please post a photo on our Facebook page and post on Twitter using #wetherbywhalersesu.

#campathome

Invitations just emailed out to join the Northumberland Scouts led world record attempt for the most people camping at home during the covid-19 outbreak.

Please take part in the culmination on 30th April. You’ll need either a tent in your garden, or if you don’t have access to one, you can build an “indoors” tent.

More details at https://www.campathome.org.uk/

You’ll qualify for a night away if you send us photo evidence, and please also send a photo to #campathome

Help your neighbours

Covid-19_help_leaflet_A4

Leeds city council have now published a helpline phone number for vulnerable, self isolating people to ring if they’re in need of help. We’ve incorporated this into a new leaflet which also includes details for those wanting to help. Please print this out, cut it into fours and, wearing uniform and gloves, pop it through as many neighbours’ letterboxes as you can.

Scouts are seen as a positive help in times of trouble; be proud of that heritage & help where you feel able. But please work in pairs and remove yourself from any situation you feel uncomforatable.
